For My Writer Friends

In an earlier post, I said my muse is always on call.  Evidently that isn't true.  I think my muse must have run off with Sadie because the voices in my head are quiet.  It won't stay like that for long, so I'm taking advantage of this quiet time to read a book.  Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, by Renni Browne and Dave King.

To my writer friends - this is a great book that focuses on showing vs. telling, characterization, exposition, point of view, proportion, beats, and dialogue mechanics.  Unlike some, it's clear and easy to read.  I've been writing for a LONG time, but honing the craft is essential.  In the early days, I thought having a great story was enough.  Not true.  I might be a tad over 40 (that's as close to my real age as I care to admit), but I'm still a 'young' writer in the publishing world, and I have to continue to educate myself.  Other books I'd recommend are The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman, Stephen King on Writing by (naturally) Stephen King, and Write Away by Elizabeth George.  All good books about writing.

My age was kinda bothering me the other day.  I mean, I'm starting in the publishing world a little late in life.  But recently I chatted with an author who is about 10 years older than me, and she has published 34 books.  I told her that I was afraid I might not ever hit that number.  She said she published her first book at 46, and she is still going strong.  This gives me hope!  All right...I am 46 too.

That's all I have for today.  My beloved Patrick thinks I should talk about our new Harley (now there's a sign of midlife!).  I swore I'd never ride a motorcycle.  I'm scared of them.  But Patrick is very careful, and I wear a helmet.  There is something to be said for the wind in your face on back country roads.  While we're riding, often a huge appreciation of all that God has created sweeps over me.  So, never say never...

My cover for book #2 in the series is nearing the final stages.  Hopefully I'll be able to share it soon!  Until next time...blessings to you all!
