How To Get Started on Twitter
It's official. I am a twitterer. Apparently, this is the latest and greatest networking tool, and I have been behind the times. It took me a little while to get set up, but my posts automatically feed to my Facebook page now also. So, if you are already on Facebook, why not link it to Twitter? Check out the sidebar on my blog and you'll see my latest posts, and you can also join Twitter from here, if you're interested.
Michael Hyatt, CEO of Thomas Nelson Inc. (my publisher) offers these 12 reasons to start twittering.
If you're convinced, he also provides The Beginner's Guide to Twitter, which is what my marketing director sent to me, to help me get set up. If you follow these instructions, it's really pretty easy to get started.
Now, taking it a step further...organizing all these tweets! Writer friend Kathy Fuller suggested www.tweetdeck.com to organize tweets into groups. For example, I have one group called 'Writers'. This is where I keep up with all my writer friends. I have another group called 'Writing Business'. This is where I follow Michael Hyatt and others in the industry. Another group is 'friends', and I'll probably set one up for 'family'.
One more thing I stumbled upon - customizing your sidebar on Twitter. If you go to www.twitbacks.com, it's free to customize your own sidebar.
I am a non-techy!! I'm pretty sure that if I can do this, anyone can. What do I think so far? Well, for someone trying to promote a product, such as myself, I think this is a must. You'll hear lots of arguments and people saying, "Oh, it's just a bunch of people writing what they do all day long, boring stuff." It's really much more than that. There's a ton of information flying across the Twitter network, and you just zoom in on who and/or what interests you.
No one may really care that I'm taking my cat to the vet because she has diabetes, but someone already wrote me a note saying that their dog has diabetes, too, and that they sympathize. Sometimes, a little note from someone you know or don't know can brighten your day.
The possibilities and range for Twitter are endless, I suppose. I'm just getting started, so we'll see how this pans out, but there are people out there following hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of people. When a networking tool takes on those type of numbers, I guess we have to take notice.
Just my humble opinion. Hope you all have a great day!

Glad to see you on Twitter, Beth! And thanks to you, I discovered TweetDeck. Being able to group people makes following them so much easier.
