Recipe Friday! Amish Stromboli
Hi Everyone!
Recipe Friday again! A few folks asked how long to cook the rhubarb-walnut bread and how much vanilla. I don't know! So many of these Amish recipes just aren't quite complete! So, please chime in if you try this out and let everyone know.
However, I DID try this next recipe out just last night. My husband is hard to please when it comes to food, but when I asked him to rate this dish from 1 to 10 (ten highest)...he gave it a '10'. So, this one has been tested. Here is the original recipe the way it was given to me by an Amish friend. See my notes at the end.
Stromboli
Dough:
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1 tsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
2 1/2 cups bread flour
Filling:
1 lb. cheese, diced
1/2 lb. ham, diced
1/2 lb. salami, diced
2 Tbsp. spaghetti sauce (or cream of mushroom soup)
1 medium onion, diced (optional)
Topping:
1 tsp. seasoned salt
1 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 16 oz. jar spaghetti or pizza sauce
In a large bowl, mix all of the dough ingredients. Wait 5 minutes then divide the dough into six equal parts. Roll each into a circle. Each stuffed stromboli will have a top and bottom circle of dough. On three of the circles, place 1/3 of the cheese and meat in the center, making sure to leave an empty edge all around, then add the onion and sauce. Cover each with a plain dough circle. Pinch the edges all around to seal tight. Sprinkle tops with seasoned salt and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Brush each with the butter, top with sauce, and serve.
MY NOTES: I made the dough exactly as stated. Be sure to roll it out on a floured surface. For the filling, I used pepperoni instead of salami, and I did use the spaghetti sauce instead of cream of mushroom soup. I put in the onion and also added a 1/2 bell pepper, a small sweet pepper, and some black olives. For the cheese -- I used an Italian mix and some parmesan....mostly because that's what I had in my frig!
I made mine in long loaves, and after I pulled them from the oven and brushed them with the melted butter, I put them back in the oven for about 5 minutes. I heated the spaghetti sauce in a separate pot and spooned over individual servings.
Super good! Let me know what you think!
